How To Succeed in Street Teaming

By Laura Arcudi.

Several months ago, some of our Western Australian members decided to attend the 2011 Channel 7 Telethon in Perth. The Channel 7 Perth Telethon is a televised charity event that aims to raise funds to provide financial and social support to the children of Western Australia. This is their story.

What happens when you mix three DCSTAC members and a 24 hour television event that is broadcasted to the entire state of Western Australia? A lot of craziness, sleep deprivation and a few Harry Potter costumes to top it off.

Mary, Sam and I had a crazy idea at an impromptu meet up one day to head to Telethon; the largest non-stop weekend long charity fundraiser held annually in Perth… little did we know what we were getting ourselves in for. The plan was simple, dress up in a tonne of StarKid gear (yes, we wore quidditch robes) and try and bring a bit of Darren magic to the event while we stayed there for 16 hours.

Within the first three minutes of walking in the venue we were approached with a simple question “Are you guys particularly good finders?” after the three minutes of flailing we managed to pull ourselves together and made some very good StarKid friends. Tip number one; wear your StarKid/Darren merch out, you will be amazed how quickly it can be recognised.

To give you a good idea of how popular this event is, we were told we could be waiting up until 1am to get in the doors; we arrived at 7pm, ouch. Thankfully by 9pm we were in and it was ready to hit the ground running. Wizard God only knows how we did it but we managed in a sold out auditorium to get three rows from the front about 2 metres away from the producers. Let’s just say they loved the idea of “Bringing the magic to telethon” and we got comments on our attire from people like Hugh Sheridan, that guy from Home and Away and BooBoo Stewart.

Tip two when out promoting; make friends with the people around. By 11pm we had a couple of ladies sitting behind us who asked why we all dressed up we said we are bringing a bit of Darren magic. They only knew Glee from their daughters watching it and were convinced Darren was gay… well, as street teamers we proved them wrong and by the time the hour was up they had a new reason to watch glee.

2am and it was getting quiet in there… but the girls were still fan-girling, its true what Rachel says, you need repellent. As the auditorium was sure to be filled up by 6am this was our chance to get in there early and do our work. Every couple of seats had a Darren face on them and a few hours later we heard things like “why is there a dudes face on my chair?” and “oh my god it’s Blaine!”. Tip three: use the quiet times of an event you attend to plant some things like flyers or something…they create talk.

4am; sleep deprived and feeling like we were on an uncomfortable plane ride we started to break out into a version of “Harry Freakin’ Potter” after a few laughs and what the hell looks from people around a producer came up to us and we hit the jackpot. Which leads us to tip number four; even though you get weird looks keep going, you may not be being noticed positively by SOME people but it’s noticed. The producer came up to us and by 5am we were on television. For anyone in Perth you would have caught us at 7am and 10am as well.

From then on it was sit back and enjoy the show, by show I mean people rocking up to the venue and seeing Darren faces on their chair. By 11am and 14 hours there we were wrecked and decided our work there was done. It was fun and not something I think anyone will be forgetting anytime soon!

So there we have it. How To Succeed At Street Teaming With Actually Trying.

Hello. I'm a dedicated Australian fan of Darren and I noticed this chapter has over 200 members and only two officers. I'm sure with his popularity down here the group will be grow and when it does will you be looking for more officers from other states?

The officers of the Darren Criss Street Team are chosen by the admins of said street team, after an application process. At this stage (14th January) officer applications will not be accepted, but they may be opening up again very soon. So keep a look out. :) Visit the facebook group (facebook.com/groups/officialdcst) and the main tumblr (originaldcst.tumblr.com) for more information.

Applause for Darren

applausefordarren:

How much nicer it would be, if he walked out that door, and instead of hearing people scream, he heard applause?

Saturday 21st, stage door. Don’t scream, just clap. It’ll be beautiful and warranted and organic.

Please spread the word.
